Early Childhood Development education teachers in Bomet have downed tools in protest against unpaid salaries for more than 7 months.
Learning in more than 1,000 ECDE centers in Bomet was disrupted by the ongoing strike by the ECDE teachers.
The ECDE teachers have vowed not to resume until the county government addresses the issues of remuneration and better terms of service.
Addressing the media, the executive secretary for the Bomet branch Richard Chebusit accused the county executive of turning a blind eye to ECDE teachers who had been working on probation for six months and were due for confirmation after that period, but the union said instead members were issued with a three-year contract.
“It's so unfortunate that our unionists have been working under immense and unbearable terms, we have raised our grievances to the County government, but they unfortunately turned a blind eye to us. Most of our Members have been working under probation for the last six months without pay,” explained Chebusit.
In their petition, the ECDE teachers urged the County government to provide them with appointment letters on permanent and pensionable terms, just like other county employees and ensure better remuneration as per the guidelines of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
“We have presented our petition to the county assembly, recommendations were reached out and our unionists were expecting immediate expedition of the same from the executive arm of the County,” explained Chebusit.
The teachers have vowed not to return to work until their grievances are addressed.
