Farmers warned against selling maize cheaply
By Peter Ochieng
Farmers across the country have been warned against putting their maize up for sell at throw away prices.
Farmers in most of the maize growing areas are either harvesting or planning to harvest.
Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka has in the meantime cautioned farmers against falling into the traps of selling their maize to middle men, who offer 'exploitative' prices.
"Don't be lured into selling maize cheaply. You deserve better. Stay put as we derive stability for maize prices," the county chief said on Sunday.
Lusaka attributed the current bumper harvest across the county to the free farm input distribution by his administration, adding that plans are in the pipeline to cushion farmers from exploitation.
"We are working on alternative ways of cushioning our farmers both at the county and national level."
The mechanisms include national and county administrations buying maize from farmers, at competative prices.
He spoke at Siritanyi Catholic Church, Kanduyi Sub County, during a funds drive towards infrastructural development of the place of worship.
Lusaka was accompanied by Kanduyi Member of Parliament (MP) John Makali, a host of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and other leaders.
