Gas cylinder prices in Kiambu have seen a price reduction following the recent directive from President Dr. William Ruto on the subsidization of the cylinders starting in July 2023. The President also announced that the 8 percent VAT on gas will be removed.
Speaking to KNA, a local cylinder vendor Mr. John Kimani, said that the prices have gone down since the directive was given, with the small and large cylinders having had price reductions within the past month.
“Although it’s gradual, there has been about a Sh100 to 200 reduction in the past month, I am currently selling my large 13kg cylinder at Sh2500 and my 6kg cylinder at Sh1400,” he said
A station attendee at the Lake Oil Petrol Station Ms. Lucy Kariuki shares the same sentiment of the reduction in large cylinder costs, specifically for refills for the cylinders have seen a price reduction of Sh500.
“We’ve gone from having the large cylinders starting at Sh7000 now are at Sh6200 and for those looking to make refills the small cylinders are at Sh1200 from Sh2000 there has been a drop,” she said
At the Shell Petrol Station, Francis Ndung’u said there has been a reduction in Afrigas gas but not in cylinder prices with the gas prices going down in the last month but cylinder prices staying constant at Sh3300 for the 13kg cylinder.
“Here the price of cylinders has remained the same; it was slightly higher at the beginning of the year but there has not been a change since then. But like everywhere, gas is lower,” he said.
The prices of the 6 kg cylinders are set to experience a reduction of 80 per cent as the government continues to ease the strain on citizens and continue promoting the adoption of clean energy throughout the nation.
