Go slow on politics, Otuoma tells leaders

By Peter Ochieng

Busia governor Paul Nyongesa Otuoma reiterated his call to critics, especially elected leaders to go slow on politics, urging them to instead work for the people who elected them.

Addressing parents and the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) top performers in Marachi West Ward, Butula Subcounty, the first term governor observed that incessant politicking by leaders had derailed development initiatives in most parts of the county.

Otuoma expressed regret at what he said was leaders wasting a lot of time insulting one another, and engaging in unnecessary battles at the expense of development.

After five years, the governor said politicians will have to submit their scorecards to the electorate, which will in return determine the fate of their bids for re-election.

"You're busy entertaining us with endless political banters forgetting that after five years you will also be facing the same electorate that put you in power."

The county boss urged leaders to emulate the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Marachi West Ward Simon Kuria Maina, who was the brain behind the top KCPE performers awards scheme.

''Sometimes back we were not very good friends with Mr. Maina because of some misunderstanding. But today I am a happy man because of this initiative and I would like other leaders to emulate him because politics isn't enemity, rather constructive engagement," said Otuoma.

The governor directed the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of education Beatrice Nakholi, to ensure the 60 learners who were being celebrated receive a Sh10,000 scholarship fund each.

He revealed that his administration, through the department of education will be rolling out the county bursary beginning Monday, 15th January 2024.

"I therefore urge the committees that will be responsible in identifying beneficiaries to act above board in ensuring we have a seemless process devoid of any sinister motives."

Roots Party Leader George Wajackoyah was among those present.
