Homa Bay County is set to reap big from mega infrastructure projects as part of the national government's socio-economic transformation agenda for the Nyanza region.
Internal Security Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Raymond Omollo said the projects worth billions of shillings were set to ease movement of goods and services in the area and at the same time impact positively on the livelihoods of the locals.
The PS said focus was on reviving blue economy and expediting various water and sanitation projects in the area.
Among the planned projects, he said is the rehabilitation of Mbita causeway, Homa Bay pier and Kendu Bay pier at a cost of Sh600 million.
Dr. Omollo disclosed that plans were underway to acquire a ferry to ease transportation of goods and people between the islands and the mainland.
This, he said, was set to revitalize economic activities along the shores of Lake Victoria as the government moves to boost blue economy.
The ferry, he said will provide a safer and more efficient transportation across the bays and contribute to economic growth in the region.
To complement the vessel, the PS said the government has allocated funds to complete and deliver a multi-billion road network in a bid to open up the region to more investment and improve access to markets for products from the region.
Among them, Dr. Amollo said is the Mbita-Sindo-Sori stretch which is under construction.
Others include the Rusinga ring road and Mfangano ring road which are expected to be launched soon.
“In a matter of weeks, we will be launching the construction of the Rusinga Ring Road at a cost of Sh1.2 billion. We will also be doing the Mfangano Ring Road amongst many other projects the government has committed to undertake,” he said.
Dr. Omollo was speaking at Mbita High School in Homa Bay county where he led other
alumni in raising Sh.20 million to upgrade the school’s facilities.
Dr. Omollo was flanked by his counterparts Dr. Belio Kipsang (Education), Alfred K’Ombudo (Trade), Kisumu Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda, MP's Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Felix Oduor 'Jalango' (Lang'ata), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem) and Gideon Ochanda (Bondo),
