Governor Mwangaza ‘breaks silence’ after third impeachment

Embattled Meru governor Bishop Kawira Mwangaza is hopeful that the Senate will save her once again, after Members of the Meru County Assembly (MCAs) impeached her for the third time on Thursday.

As reported by Nairobi Review, 40 out of 69 MCAs voted in favour of the impeachment motion on grounds of abuse of office, gross misconduct and gross violation of the constitution and other laws.

17 MCAs voted against the impeachment while three absconded from the vote. The motion was tabled by deputy majority Leader Zipporah Kinya.

Mwangaza stands impeached as the motion is forwarded to the Senate, with Senators having the last chance to either save her or dismiss the process.

As she looks forward to defending herself against the Senate for the third time, Mwangaza expressed confidence that the latest setback will come to pass.

“This too will come to pass! Gavana ni Mama,” she posted on her verified Facebook account shortly after MCAs sent her packing again, attracting reactions and counteractions as sampled below:

Kigunda Gikunda M'Raibuta: It won't. This will take you home. God has given you many chances to redeem yourself. It's done and dusted.

Ngui Muvenyi: You may be a good pastor, but definitely not a good leader. Populists, sympathy seekers, and God is all powerful and I am a daughter/son of God are the least effective leaders, biased and definitely make their people poorer and poorer.

Muya Kihumba: I now think Meru MCA are petty!

Elected in 2022 as an independent candidate, Mwangaza was impeached in 2022, 2023 and now 2024. She is the most impeached governor in Kenya, beating former Embu County boss Martin Wambora.

The Senate dismissed her impeachment in 2022 and 2023. She hopes to be lucky a third time.
