High Court declines to stop Azimio demos
By Peter Ochieng
Anti-government protests called by Azimio leaders are expected to go on as planned, this week.
This is after the High Court on Monday declined to issue an order stopping the protests planned for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week.
Though lawyer Adrian Kamotho, Martin Gitau had filed a petition seeking for orders to stop the planned protests.
Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, Azimio leader Raila Odinga and ODM Party were listed as respondents in the suit.
The petitioner wanted the court to stop the demos, arguing that past protests have proved that violence, injures, deaths and destruction of property are always the order of the day.
“That unless this honourable court intervenes, the applicant/petitioner is apprehensive that the respondents herein shall proceed in their unlawful course of unlawful and violent protests, to the detriment of the majority of law-abiding citizens who deserve to carry on with their daily activities without disruptions,” reads the petition in part.
However, Justice Mugambi declined to issue the orders.
He instead set the case for mention on September 21, 2023.
Azimio leaders insist that the demos are on, despite a warning from President William Ruto that they will not happen.
