KWS launches new strategic plan, embarks on transformative journey

By Peter Ochieng

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has launched a new strategic plan, with a view of transforming Kenya’s conservation efforts.

The 2024-2028 Strategic Plan is hinged on five key goals: fostering thriving wildlife populations, building resilient ecosystems rich in biodiversity, enhancing community and stakeholder engagement, expanding the wildlife economy, and creating a high-performing KWS.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary (CS) Rebecca Miano speaking during the launch at KWS headquarters in Nairobi on Monday, praised the new strategy, adding that wildlife conservation has a major role in improving communities’ economic status.

"The KWS Strategic Plan embodies a forward-looking vision for wildlife conservation that aligns with Kenya's socio-economic aspirations."

“It will implement science-driven approaches to conservation, helping to restore ecosystems and increase wildlife populations,” she added.

The Strategic Plan, she added, will address illegal wildlife trade and other challenges, ensuring sustainability in conservation.

“The KWS Strategic Plan aims to equitably share conservation benefits, especially with communities coexisting with wildlife, marking a step toward sustainable development.” On his part, KWS Director General Dr. Erustus Kanga said the launch means they are embarking on a transformative.

“This ambitious roadmap is not just a plan; it’s a bold commitment to securing the future of Kenya’s wildlife and empowering our communities. With a focus on community engagement, a thriving wildlife economy, and resilient ecosystems, KWS is poised to achieve new milestones in conservation,” stated Kanga.

His sentiments were echoed by KWS board of trustees’ chairman, Walter Raria Koipaton.

"Today marks a special day for KWS as we unveil our visionary Strategic Plan 2024-2028. The Board of Trustees is proud to have steered this process, built on stakeholder engagement, inclusivity, and innovation.”

The plan, Raria, said, aligns with KWS’s mission to conserve Kenya’s wildlife heritage for the well-being of both nature and people.

“As we look ahead, we recognize the high expectations of Kenyans and are committed to delivering on this promise. We secure a brighter future for wildlife and our communities.”
