By Herman Manyora
When Eleanor Roosevelt thought aloud, that the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams, she must have had the CHINA-KENYA bound Belt and Road initiative in mind.
strategic partnership that was to herald a new dawn of economic and social transformation.
One that would later be, a yardstick of premier success with regards to leveraging on focal infrastructural development as a silver bullet to opening up Kenya’s economy to new possibilities and maximization of its full potential for the larger welfare gain of its citizens and those of neighbouring regions.
China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI),
A monumental undertaking that traverses continents, has been instrumental in reshaping Kenya's economic and social landscape. The fire in the belly of this initiative been, a deep desire to foster connectivity and development through infrastructural projects.
And true to that noble calling, this far, it has written home a wave of multi-dimensional transformation in Kenya. In this article, we delve deeper, and out of our gracious hands, usher you into the stories of individuals and communities, from diverse backgrounds across the country, who have experienced tangible benefits from the BRI and tapped into the low hanging fruits of the BRI.
It is for this reason that we take the distinguished honour to illuminate the profound impact it has had on their lives and communities around them.
1. Mary Wavinya: 63years, Entrepreneur, Machakos County
Wavinya’s story is emblematic of the transformative power of the BRI.
She started her small textile business in a modest workshop. Like many other budding entrepreneurs, she dreamt of nothing but growth and prosperity.
However, the lack of reliable transportation infrastructure proved to be a significant obstacle. With the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), a flagship project under the BRI, Wavinya’s fortunes changed for the better.
The SGR provided her with a costeffective and efficient means to transport her products, reducing transportation costs and meeting delivery timelines.
To ice the cake, it opened up new markets in neighbouring countries like Uganda and Rwanda, allowing her business to flourish beyond her wildest dreams.
Wavinya now employs more workers from her community, and is on the path to becoming a regional textile industry leader. A dream that looked far-fetched at the beginning, but now taking shape with the alignment of her business stars, all thanks to the Standard Gauge Railway.
2. Mwandawiro Mwanyigha: 16yrs, Student, Taita-Taveta County
Mwandawiro, a determined young student from a one-time underserved village in Kenya, faced numerous hurdles on his educational journey. The absence of proper roads made his daily commute to school arduous and time-consuming.
A story akin to the familiar one of residents of Bamba market in coastal Kenya, a market whose access was too arduous and treacherous, thus informing the premise of the nationally acclaimed song and adage ‘SAFARI YA BAMBA NI MACHERO.’
However, the development of road infrastructure funded by China's BRI was a turning point in the trajectory of his life.
The new all-weather roads not only shortened his daily journey, but also connected his village to nearby towns and cities, opening up opportunities for better education, social networking and knowledge transfer.
Mwandawiro’s dream of becoming a medical doctor, once distant, is now within reach, thanks to the improved access to quality education.
3. Wangare Kamau: 38yrs, Avocado Farmer, kiambu County
Wangare’s story epitomizes the impact of the BRI on agriculture in Kenya.
As a dedicated farmer, she not only struggled with low crop yields, but also a limited access to markets due to inadequate infrastructure.
The construction of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, part of the Belt and Road Initiative, revolutionized and revitalized her farming venture. Not only did the highway reduce the distance to urban markets, but it also achieved swift and near-seamless transportation of her produce.
Wangare now enjoys better market access, reduced post-harvest loss, higher profits and to crown it all, the ability to invest in sustainable farming practices.
Furthermore, her increased income has empowered her to provide her children with quality education and improved standards of living, thus breaking the cycle of poverty and extending them a sense of human dignity.
4. Lekishon leteipa: 31 years, Plant operator, Nairobi City
Leteipa’s journey towards stable employment was tagged with a plethora of challenges and heart Wrenching setbacks until he secured a job in a newly established manufacturing plant, made possible through the Belt and Road Initiative's investment in industrial parks. This newfound job not only provided him with a steady and rewarding income, but also offered training and skill development opportunities. Through which, Leteipa has acquired a considerable latitude in terms of skills set.
Leteipa’s improved economic situation has translated into a better life for his family. He now has the means to provide his children with good education, afford luxuries and plan for their future as well.
5 Nekesa wafula: 42 years, Public health Advocate, Nairobi city
Nekesa, a dedicated to the core community health worker, faced difficulties in reaching remote villages in need of healthcare services due to poor infrastructure.
The BRI's investment in healthcare infrastructure has led to the construction of new medical facilities and improved road networks.
These developments have made it easier for Nekesa to provide essential healthcare services to previously underserved communities. Her dedication has saved countless lives and significantly improved the overall health of her community, marking a testament to the BRI's impact on healthcare access in Kenya.
Conclusion
The stories of Wavinya, Mwandawiro, Wangare, Leteipa and Nekesa, are just but a glimpse into the profound impact of China's Belt and Road Initiative in Kenya.
By investing in critical infrastructural projects, the BRI has created opportunities for economic revitalisation, education, healthcare, and personal development.
These transformations have had ripple effects across Kenya and other countries participating in the initiative, demonstrating the enduring power of global cooperation and investment in shaping brighter futures. As the BRI continues to evolve and expand, it is imperative that the world takes note of the numerous lives it has touched and the extraordinary potential it.
