Locals benefit from free medical camp

Hundreds of Kisumu residents benefitted from a two-day free medical camp, organised by Mercy and Love Foundation, in partnership with KMET and the County government of Kisumu.

The camp, held on Tuesday and Wednesday at KMET’s Tom Mboya estate, sought to reach out to patients facing challenges to access healthcare services.

Access to healthcare services has become a herculean task for many, owing to challenges caused by the ongoing shift from National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), and the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Dr Mercy Otieno, Mercy and Love Foundation founder said the organisation has been registered in the USA, adding that it will soon be registered in Kenya for continued care.

“We would like to continue collaborating with local health facilities and organisations for continued care,” she said.

The clinician said she was accompanied by over 15 doctors from various professional backgrounds to make the camp a success. Breast and cervical cancer screening, blood sugar checks, eye and dental services were among those on offer, free of charge.

Over 300 residents turned up for both days. Addressing the issue of sustainability, Dr. Monica Oguttu, KMET Executive Director said one of the organisation’s pillars is having front print in communities they work with.

“We already have integrated services running in communities we work in. Even after this camp, we will be able to continue offering services,” she added.

Dr Lilian Odhiambo, coordinator, cancer screening services at KMET noted that the disease is manageable if detected early. “Early diagnosis is key in treatment,” she said.

One of her clients during the camp was Violet Achieng, a student.

“The services being offered here are key. I was scared, had so many questions but I now feel relaxed after going through the screening exercise,” she said.

Peter Orino had an eye problem. He left a happy man after being given medication and spectacles, free of charge.

Siaya and Homabay residents are set to benefit from the medical camp on Thursday and Friday respectively.
