Makueni receives 2 tonnes of Aflosafe

The State Department of Crop Protection has donated two tonnes of Aflosafe to help maize and sorghum farmers combat the prevalence of aflatoxin in the area.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, County Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Executive Committee Member (ECM) Joyce Mutua, disclosed that the aflosafe will be used on 5,000 acres to manage aflatoxin.

Consequently, Mutua said that her department will train 1,000 farmers on how to make use of the chemical in their farms in a bid to curb the huge wastage of their crop production.

"The two tonnes of Aflosafe that we have received today (yesterday) is going to be used on 5,000 acres. My officers will train the farmers on how to use the chemical in a bid to manage aflatoxin that has made many of them incur huge losses,” said Mutua.

Further she said that the farmers will have to undergo the training before the next planting season in October this year.

Aflosafe is a fungal treatment aimed at managing mainly aflatoxin in maize and sorghum. Aflotoxin is a threat to human and animal health.
