A somber mood engulfed Kodwar B Village in Rachuonyo East sub-county following an incident in which a man allegedly killed his wife and two-year-old son.

Area Assistant Chief Denis Abong'o said the man allegedly killed both his 23-year-old wife identified as Michele Awuor and their son barely two weeks after they got married.

The bodies of Awuor and her son were found on the floor of their house early morning Friday. Awuor’s body had deep panga cuts on her neck and head while the son also had a deep panga cut which chopped off his gullet.

The bodies were discovered by Awuor’s mother in-law who became suspicious after the deceased stayed in her house longer than usual before waking up.

Abong’o said according to the suspect’s family members, the couple did not show any form of disagreement on Thursday.

“The family said the couple did not show any signs of disagreement prior to the murder incident. They ate supper and went to sleep as usual but the family members were shocked by this bizarre incident,” Abong’o said.

Abong’o said no one heard any commotion on Thursday night or Friday morning. "Nobody heard any commotion which could raise an alarm, it was not until morning when the mother-in-law went to their house and discovered the bodies,” Abong’o added.

It is suspected that the man first locked the door before he committed the heinous act.

The administrator said after the killings, the suspect disappeared to an unknown place.

The reasons for murder of the woman and her son still remain a mystery. Abong’o added that this is the second murder incident that the suspect has committed in his family. He said the suspect killed his brother two years ago.

“Two years ago, the suspect was assaulting his mother but when his brother went to restrain him, he murdered the brother. He was arrested and detained for some time before he returned home,” Abong’o said.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Samson Kinne said they are looking for the suspect. “The suspect disappeared after the incident but investigations have commenced. We will get hold of him for punitive legal measures,” Kinne said.

The bodies were moved to Rachuonyo South Sub-County hospital mortuary for postmortem.
