A 56-year-old man in Embu was sentenced to a 15 years’ jail term for killing his wife for serving him food without meat during the 2020 Christmas Day festivities

This was after High Court Judge Lucy Njuguna found Crispin Nyaga Ita guilty of the offense of murder of his wife Catherine Mbuya at their home in Kambaru Village of Mbeere North Sub-County.

During the hearing proceedings, the court heard that on the morning of the fateful day, Nyaga had sold Miraa worth Sh. 3, 000 and gave her wife Sh. 2, 000 to buy meat and other items for the festivities.

He returned later in the day drunk after an outing with friends only to be served a meal without meat which irritated him.

It was during the ensuing argument that he took a panga and slashed her left leg below the knee and after she fell down took a wooden plank and hit her on the head killing her on the spot.

The postmortem report indicated the victim suffered a broken leg and her death was as a result of trauma on the head caused by the force from a blunt object.

The couple is said to have had a rocky marriage as they used to fight regularly especially whenever the husband came home drunk.

A probation report ordered by the court indicated that he was a drunkard, a nuisance and a threat to his children and opposed a non-custodial sentence.

In her ruling, Judge Njuguna noted that Nyaga acted savagely and his action called for a deterrent sentence.

“I find the accused a threat to his children and the community and deserve a custodial sentence,” she said.
