Meru Deputy Governor Calls for Concerted effort to fight insecurity in Igembe North

Meru Deputy Governor (DG), Rev. Mutuma M'Ethingia, has challenged local security personnel, to work tirelessly to reduce crime, especially in Igembe North.

Mutuma was speaking, Saturday, during the burial of  a former Antubetwe Akiongo Member of the County Assembly (MCA), George Kaliunga, who was shot dead by cattle rustlers recently.

The Deputy Governor who was flanked by the Maua Word MCA, Dancan Kangwana, among other dignitaries said the rise of banditry in Igembe North region, calls for concerted efforts from both County and the National Governments.

The DG, however, noted that more security officers have been deployed to effectively address the security challenge and thus no cause for alarm.

According to the police, the former MCA who had served for two terms was shot on the chest, as he pursued raiders who had stolen livestock from the area.

He called on the police to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book, describing the deceased of being a man of integrity.

"It is heartbreaking to lose someone like him in such a violent and senseless manner," Mutuma mourned.

He stressed that the death was a stark reminder of the dangers faced by the residents of Igembe North in the face of cattle rustling.

“It is a scourge that continues to threaten the livelihoods and lives of our people, and we must come together to fight against it," he added.
