By Peter Ochieng Former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi alias Sonko is reportedly preparing to recapture the seat during the August 09, 2022, general elections. Sonko was elected Nairobi governor on the ruling Jubilee party ticket in 2017, before being impeached in December 2020, over various charges related to gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office and gross misconduct. The flamboyant politician has been in the cold since then, albeit preparing for a comeback. According to Francis Wambua, his aid, Sonko is seeking to reclaim the gubernatorial seat. He is coming home to where he was voted by more than 800,000 residents in the last elections, which was the second-highest after the presidential vote tally,” said Wambua, as quoted by The Star. He defeated former Nairobi governor Evans Odhiambo Kidero in 2017. Recently, the former Nairobi Senator bolted out of the ruling Jubilee party and joined Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka-led Wiper party. "The Buffalo gang is growing by the day! This evening, flagged by @TheWiperParty Chairman Chirau Ali Mwakwere, SG Shakila Abdalla, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua and Embakasi South Mp Julius Mawathe, we received the immediate former Nairobi Governor @MikeSonko to the Wiper family," tweeted Musyoka, shortly after the former governor joined his party. Besides Sonko, current Nairobi governor Ann Kananu, Westlands Member of Parliament (MP) Tim Wanyonyi, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja and the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) president Richard Ngatia, are among those in the race to become the next Nairobi City County boss.
