Millions of Kenyans spent their special holiday in their home areas to plant trees in their compounds as a way of joining other Kenyans who have been sent to other regions to lead the same exercise.

Many Kenyans received the government announcement as a surprise public holiday for a nationwide tree planting day.

Speaking at his home, John Koilel, a resident of Siana, Narok West said he bought tree seedlings in order to join other millions of Kenyan in the countrywide tree planting exercise.

“As a patriot, I wanted to joined other Kenyans in tree planting exercise and we’re grateful for the government for giving us a special holiday,” said Koilel.

The public holiday is an ambitious part of the government's goal to plant 15 billion trees in 10 years.

Koilel bought over 100 tree seedlings that he planted on his parcel of land, which has surpassed the target of at least two seedlings per person on this special day.

The government is expecting Kenyans to plant over 100 million trees country wide in an initiative meant to combat climate change.

Every Kenyan is being encouraged to plant at least two seedlings, leading to the 100-million target.

Naneu Kisonko, a resident of Lulunga, Narok South also planted over 30 tree seedlings in her compound.

Kisonko said that the public holiday also came at right time when there is El Nino rains and expectation of the tree seedlings to survive is 99 percent.

Kisonko praised the government saying the initiative was a noble idea that enabled Kenyans to join hands in trees planting exercise nationwide in public areas and in their homes.
