Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Webuye Campus is set to reopen its doors next month, with a fresh focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses.

The Campus in Webuye town, Bungoma County has remained shut for over five years.

According to Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka Press unit, the decision to reopen the campus comes on the backdrop of a strategic agreement between the university’s management and governor Lusaka's administration.

"Under the newly inked deal, Bungoma County has leased the university campus for a period of 99 years," reads part of a statement from the press unit.

During the event, MMUST representative James Sakwa revealed that the university's board had decided to exclusively offer TVET programs at the Webuye campus.

"The institution which will operate with a degree of semi-autonomy, will offer a range of unique diploma courses, including specialized training in pedagogy."

Additionally, it will introduce programs that recognize prior learning, a key innovation aimed at enhancing skills development in the region.

Governor Lusaka, speaking at the event, pledged to support the campus’s success by ensuring the necessary infrastructure is developed to support its growth and operational efficiency.

The move comes a matter of days after Bungoma Chief Officer for Sports and Youth, Timothy Wanjala, issued a rallying call to the region’s youth to actively participate in sports and other constructive endeavours, among them education.

Addressing a talent search event in Tongaren Sub-County, Wanjala underscored the transformative power of sports in shaping young lives.

He emphasized that beyond physical fitness, sports inculcate essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership and discipline.

"These qualities are invaluable for personal and professional success," he said, further encouraging the youth to explore their talents through various platforms.

He pledged to expand talent search initiatives across the region, providing more young people with a platform to shine and contribute positively to their communities.
