Mvita Member of Parliament (MP) Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir is without a doubt a happy man, after landing the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket for the Mombasa County gubernatorial race.
The MP received a nod to vie for the top seat without having to go through what would have been a gruesome nomination exercise, after his rival, businessman Suleiman Shabbal stepped down in his favour.
Shabbal decided to vacate his gubernatorial ambitions, after ODM party leaders led by party leader Raila Odinga arrived at a consensus, following series of meetings.

Addressing members of the press on the evening of Friday, April 15, 2022, at Orange House in Nairobi, Odinga said that party stalwarts had also decided to support Mombasa Senator Mohhamed Faki's bid for a second term in office.
"Suleiman Shabbal has decided to support Sharrif Nassir as ODM gubernatorial candidate in Mombasa. Additionally, Senator Mohammed Faki will be given ODM ticket to defend his seat during the upcoming elections. Our party is now ready to face our opponents in Mombasa County," said Odinga.
On his part, Shabbal said his bid for Mombasa County's gubernatorial seat was never about him.
"The objective of becoming governor was not for Suleiman Shabbal, the objective was to bring change and development for the people of Mombasa."
"We shall work on joining his manifesto with our manifesto so that we work towards making Mombasa better," said Nassir.
The MP will now face among others, UDA candidate Hassan Omar Hassan in the Mombasa County gubernatorial contest in August.
The winner will become the second Mombasa County governor, after Ali Hassan Joho who is nearing the end of his second term in office.
