ODM nominated Member of Parliament Umulkher Harun has cautioned the government against adopting the recommendation by the Presidential Task Force on education to abolish boarding schools in the country, noting that the move would hurt students from the nomadic communities.
According to the youthful MP, closing of boarding schools would reduce the school enrolment rates for children in these schools.
Nomadic communities move from one place to another in search for pasture and water for their livestock which makes boarding schools a constant place for their children to study in.
“As the nomadic community, we do not support the abolishment of the boarding schools. The recommendations by the task force are good but to some extent, they are infringing on our rights as a nomadic people,” said Umulkher.
“Boarding schools is where our children go to, therefore it does not suit us to abolish them. It will reduce enrollment which is what we plan on increasing. We need to continue our school feeding programmes while supporting our boarding institutions,” she added.
