Nyamira county government has officially launched the People with Disabilities (PWD) Act to facilitate the implementation of its mainstream disability programs.
Governor Amos Nyaribo who presided over the official launch of People with Disabilities pledged to establish an enabling environment and disability-specific policy framework for People with Disabilities, implementing disability and mainstreaming various programs to fully access their rights.
He reveled that statics shows that over 17000 people with disabilities face challenges like isolation, discrimination, poverty, and unemployment.
Hence, the government needs to fast-track People with Disabilities Act to legalize programs to alleviate them from extreme suffering.
Nyaribo assured that the county government, will address issues of unemployment and consider the People with Disabilities in the 30% procurement allocation as provided for in law during the tendering process.
This will further help to enhance specific measures and to promote protection of People with Disabilities from discrimination and other forms of abuse and injustices and support their welfare through adequate budgetary allocation.
The Governor expressed his continuous appreciation to different partners who have supported the county government, for instance the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Manha heart, Equity and Post bank, Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Tea Development Authority (KTDA) and USAID for their unwavering support not just for the making of the People with Disabilities Act, but also in making the Child Policy Act, launched in October this year and many other programmes providing support and protection for vulnerable households.
The county government has urged the National Government to allocate sufficient budget in collaboration with partners to support persons with disability because many of them can be trained for technical skills to enable them earn and support their dependents, while contributing to the county’s economic growth.
