Nyong'o condemns police brutality as Ruto warns against extra-judicial killings
Kisumu governor Anyang'o is concerned about the safety of his constituents.
The county chief in a strong worded statement shared on Friday condemned police officers deployed to scuttle peaceful demonstrations in Kisumu, for using excessive force on innocent, harmless members of the public.
He accused police of persuing residents deep into residential areas.
"Even after stopping members of the public from exercising their democratic rights to picket over high cost of living imposed by the Kenya Kwanza government, the police armed with all manner of weapons are pursuing innocent residents deep into the residential areas and brutalizing them."
He said residents of areas such as Nyamasaria, Nyalenda, Manyatta, Obunga and Bandani have undergone difficult experiences in the hands of police officers.
Meanwhile, speaking in Murang'a County, President William Ruto warned police officers against extra-judicial killing of members of the public, while quelling anti-government demos.
“We will not allow police officers to break the law and kill people senselessly. The same way we said we'll get rid of extrajudicial killings is the same way we are committed to ensuring there is no impunity. You cannot destroy property, cause mayhem and anarchy and get away with it…you will not!" warned the president.
“We are asking our law enforcement officers to be thorough, firm and I want to commend our security agencies for being professional in how they have dealt with these people. Criminals must be dealt with firmly, decisively and make sure that everybody respects the rule of law.”
The three day anti-government protests this week end today.
