Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Dr. Paul Rono has said that the Kimugu Water Project would supply a total of over 13 million litres of clean water to over 200,000 households in Kericho County.

Speaking Wednesday during the official commissioning of the ultra-modern Kericho water supply project in Ainamoi constituency where President Dr. William Ruto officiated in the commissioning of the project, Rono said that the project cost a total of Sh1.2 billion to its completion.

Rono said that the water works project would entirely supply water to residents of Kericho town, Ainamoi, Kipkelion East, and parts of Belgut mostly through gravitational means.

He said that the remaining works being the last mile include installing pipes to connect as many residents as possible while replacing old pipes was ongoing.

The PS called on the residents to support the project by increasing the water catchment area by planting more tree seedlings to encourage sustainability of the project in order to attract more rains in the area.

Lake Victoria South Water Works Chairman Mr. Odoyo Owidi said that plans are underway to expand the project's raw water treatment works to increase the water supply volume from 13 million litres per day to 3500 cubic meters, (35, million litres) per day.

Owidi said that plans to expand the sewerage system of Kericho town were also underway where over 1500 households will be connected to the new sewerage line to improve the town's sanitation.

Owidi said that under the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), there are other flagship water projects to be developed in Kericho which will also serve other neighboring counties that include Londiani Dam targeting 600,000 cubic meters where on commencement of the project only 54,000 cubic meters to serve Kipkelion East, West, Muhoroni and Soin Sigowet sub counties.

The government will also construct the Posta Dam in Bomet County where it will supply over 80,000 cubic meters to Bomet residents and 11,000 cubic metres to supply water to Litein and Kapkatet wards in Bureti, Kericho County.

Meanwhile, Itare Dam in Nakuru which had stalled will be constructed afresh where 12,000 cubic metres of water will be supplied to Chepsir, Chepseon and Kedowa.

Present during the commissioning were; Deputy President Mr. Rigathi Gachagua, Senate Majority Leader Mr. Aaron Cheruiyot, National Assembly Majority Leader Mr. Kimani Ichung’wah, Kiharu MP Mr. Ndindi Nyoro, Kerich Governor Dr Erick Mutai, Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa and a host of several MPs.
