A nongovernmental organization known as Farm to Market Alliance has unveiled a programme to sensitize youths in Kisumu to fully exploit their potential in agriculture as a source of livelihood.

Speaking during an awareness that brought together of 70 youths drawn from the 7 sub-counties of Kisumu the organization’s regional coordinator Mr. Ronald Otieno Orwa disclosed that the programme will take place for the next five years targeting youth between 25 and 35 years in Kisumu.

Orwa organized a gathering of youths from Kisumu County to assess their perceptions of agriculture and farming, aiming to support enterprise and joblessness reduction, fostering productivity and food production. “We have realized that this is the best course to pursue if we want the local youths to progress and FTMA will help us achieve this,” he added.

Mr. Caleb Magambo of the Cereals Growers Association supported Orwa’s assertions pointing out that such training will equip the youth to be creators and not hunters of jobs that he noted will also help end matters of lack of food, starvation and crime in the country.

Youths within Kisumu Sub County can exploit and excel in Agriculture because the youth have shunned matters of farming and agriculture and we desire to entice them to love agriculture and be self-employed and self-reliant. Masses of youths engage in agriculture then the problem of lack of food will be a thing of the past and matters of crime will be on the decline because the young people will be permanently engaged and have no time to engage in crime.

The NFTMSA's training is beneficial for women, as it reveals agriculture as a business, not a dirty one, and encourages youth to focus on farming.
