Busia County Vice Chairman of the Boda Boda sector David Odhiambo has urged the interior CS Kithure Kindki to intervene in the security and safety of the operators within the County.
Speaking to the press in Busia, Odhiambo said that at least 20 of its members have been killed by unknown persons within three months.
‘Our members have been killed and we have brought our complaints to the police but we have not been assisted,’ he said, urging the CS Kindiki to intervene.
He called for the complete overhaul of officers at Busia police station, blaming them for inaction.
Protus Okeyo, the chairman of Burumba ward urged those who have not registered in the sector to collect forms at the ward level.
"We have consulted the relevant stakeholders and decided that those who have not been registered in the sector, especially young boys who cleared standard eight and form four this year, will not be allowed to operate, "he said, adding that the sector leadership is always blamed in case of accidents.
Okeyo urged parents not to let their children engage in boda boda business during this festive season.
‘I also want to urge Busia OCS to carry out a crackdown so that the perpetrators behind the killings of our members are arrested,’ he said.
Early last month, the boda boda operators staged peaceful demonstrations in Busia town following the murder of one of the riders in Mayenje ward.
The incident led to the torching of the house and property of the former boda boda chairman Erick Makokha on suspicion that he was one of the organizers behind the killings.
