Property of unknown amount was destroyed by an inferno as students of Kilgoris Boy's High School set ablaze one of the school dormitories.

Speaking to the press, the school Principal Philip Ole Limpaso revealed that problems started at the institution on Sunday, following a water supply disconnection brought about by power complications.

"On Sunday we had a water shortage problem brought about by transformer complications. We talked to Kenya Power and they promised to intervene.

We gave this feedback to our students and urged them to maintain calm as the issue was being resolved. They seemed to be convinced by our efforts to resolve the issue. We later came to learn that wasn't the case as at around 11 P.M., they attempted to torch the school dining hall and one of the classes," he said.

However, he said, the students’ efforts were thwarted as the fire was put off before it had caused havoc and the Transmara West Sub County security team called in to restore order.

Nonetheless, the rioting students managed to burn one of the school dorms by 6 AM on Monday.

Efforts by the school administration and the security team to save the situation failed to yield fruits this time round as harm had already been done.

Limpaso said the wave of destruction left by the inferno would have been avoided had the students employed alternative conflict resolution mechanisms like dialogue.

Speaking separately, Transmara West Sub County Director of Education Chrispine Omondi revealed that following the unrest, the school had been closed indefinitely to allow time for investigations even as unconfirmed reports indicated that close to ten students were being held by police for interrogation.
