Residents and human rights activists in Kisumu County are demanding that Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome apologises over his utterances that victims that were killed by police during the demonstrations in Kisumu were people hired from the local morgues to display and confound the press that they were victims of police brutality.

Led by Audi Ogada, the activists challenged Koome to extract hospital records starting with those from the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga teaching and referral hospital that establish the identities of those that were admitted and treated at the facility with police gun shots.

The activists are demanding that Koome explains his statements that it’s the Azimio brigade that hired dead bodies from the mortuaries and later claimed that they were victims of police brutality.

“There is a lot of propaganda out there with the intention of demoralizing the police officers and intimidating them which is very unfortunate. What we have seen the Azimio fraternity doing is going to the mortuaries and hiring dead bodies and then purporting to the press that the bodies are victims of police brutality which makes us wonder as to how low some of these leaders go,” statement by Koome that has caused furor among the residents and human rights activists in Kisumu.
