Residents of Homa Bay County have been urged to take measures to curb the spread of cholera.

County Commissioner Moses Lilan said so far the disease had claimed two lives while another one hundred people had contracted the disease and been treated.

He told the residents to adhere to the government directive on closure of all public eateries until the disease is fully contained.

Lilan told the locals to observe high levels of hygiene to curb the spread of the disease.

Speaking after touring Sindo Hospital to assess the cholera situation today, the County Commissioner told patients presenting cholera symptoms to get early treatment to avert more deaths.

He at the same time sounded an alert over the mushrooming of suspect religious sects in parts of the county.

The CC said they have arrested one of the suspect preachers linked with advocating against hospital visits and medication for the sick.

“We are cautioning members of the public against falling prey to such cults which also preach to their followers to fast to death,” he warned.

Lilan said the county security personnel have cracked down on a gang behind a wave of crime across the county and the neighbouring counties of Migori and Kisumu.

He said so far they have arrested four suspects linked with recent incidents of burglaries, gang rapes and violent robberies in some parts of the county.

“We appeal to members of the public to volunteer to authorities any information they have to assist in apprehending suspects, “he said.

Lilan said the government was in the process of creating more administrative units in the county to improve service delivery to the residents.
