Inexperienced drivers and high speeding have been singled out as some of the factors contributing to road accidents in Makueni.
Senior Traffic Officer Sergeant James Mbithi has said some of the drivers do not understand the road signs besides driving recklessly, leading to accidents that would have been avoided.
“Many of the drivers are not qualified and have no valid licenses. They drive recklessly and fail to observe basic road signs leading to fatal accidents,” lamented Mbithi, while speaking to KNA at Makueni Police Station in Wote town Tuesday.
Though he did not give statistics on the number of accidents in the county, the traffic officer warned drivers to ensure they are well-trained before they apply for licenses, while warning that inexperienced drivers risk prosecution.
“Any unqualified driver found driving along our roads will be arrested and prosecuted,” he warned.
Mbithi disclosed that they are expecting to have cameras to assist the department along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway and Wote-Machakos road to assist them in identifying speeding drivers. The cameras will capture the registration numbers of the vehicle and the model.
