Speaker Wetang'ula 'demands' respect for foreign diplomats

By Peter Ochieng

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula on Friday came to the defence of foreign diplomats, over what he said was attacks from the opposition.

The Speaker said diplomats in the country deserve respect, as Kenya seeks to strengthen and enhance diplomatic ties.

Speaking in Webuye West, Bungoma county on Friday, Wetang'ula said politicians should refrain from attacking foreign envoys.

"Kenya is a country that uphold respect for diplomats of various States. Leaders should restrain themselves from attacking envoys for the good of the country."

"Kenya has benefited alot from the outstanding bilateral relations with America and leaders should reciprocate the gesture by respecting its envoys," added the Speaker.

He spoke a day after Azimio leader Raila Odinga seemingly attacked US ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman, over her comments on the outcome of the 2022 presidential contest.

Whitman said the 2022 race to State House was free and fair by any standards.

William Ruto was declared winner, after beating Odinga, George Wajackoyah and David Mwaure.

Odinga who was irked by Whitman's opinion told her to shut her mouth, lest he initiates a process of recalling her from the role of US envoy to Kenya.

But Speaker Wetang'ula cautioned politicians against use of 'unpolished' language on diplomats, that could in the long run deter potential foreign investors.

"Kenya should not allow politicians to employ regressive politics and drive away potential investors."

"As Kenyans, we must speak and handle our issues amicably. We should guard against any attempts to allow our political differences soil the outstanding diplomatic relations with our foreign partners," Wetang'ula noted.

President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua have also defended the envoy against Odinga's attacks.
