Over 80 learning devices disbursed to public schools under the Digital Literacy Programme were stolen at Achiya Echakara Kamuriai primary school in Teso North sub county in Busia County.
Thieves broke into the school ICT lab over the weekend and walked away with the devices due to weak security within the institution.
Addressing the press, the school principal Madam Linet Anyang' confirmed that a total of 84 tablets out of 96 tablets were stolen and so far, only 4 have been recovered by the police and are at Amagoro police station.
“Over the weekend our ICT lab was broken into and 84 tablets were stolen. We reported the matter to the police at Amagoro police station and only 4 tablets have been recovered so far,” noted Madam Anyang’.
According to Anyang’ the school has one-night guard manning the school at night which might be a factor that have contributed to the theft.
Speaking after visiting the institution the bishop for Katakwa Diocese Rt. Rev. John Okude urged the local administration and police to work closely with learning institutions in the area to ensure all gadgets meant for learning are secure.
“We highly condemn the incident as I urge the schools to work closely with the county commissioners, police and even chiefs and village elders in ensuring that these gadgets are not stolen,” said Bishop Okude.
Already the teachers and guard have recorded statements with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Amagoro pending more investigation by the police on the matter.
The school blames football fans who use the school on weekends as the main factor contributing to the access to the institution by unauthorized persons who might have schemed the crime.
