A somber mood engulfed Kobondo trading center in Ndhiwa Sub County after two people died when a public service vehicle they were traveling in was involved in a tragic accident near the center.
The accident occurred when a 14 seater matatu hit a tractor which had stalled in the middle of the road.
The tractor was delivering sugarcane to a sugar factory when it developed mechanical problems and stalled in the middle of the road.
Homa Bay County Police Commander Samson Kinne said the driver of the ill-fated matatu failed to spot the stalled tractor because it lacked reflectors when it crashed on it from the back.
The bodies of the deceased who succumbed to their injuries on the spot were moved to the Manyatta Kobondo mortuary.
Meanwhile the injured were rushed to Hospital Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital with one in critical condition.
Mr Kennedy Omolo, Deputy County Health Promotion Officer in charge of Communication said a clinical officer was among the dead.
"She was a student and was travelling for her classes when the accident occurred," he said.
The wrecked vehicles were towed to Ndhiwa police station with Mr Kinne urging motorists to obey traffic rules to avoid such incidents.
