Azimio to resume weekly demos next week
By Peter Ochieng
Azimio La Umoja One Kenya leadership is set to resume weekly demos next week.
The protests were halted earlier this month, after President William Ruto agreed to a bipartisan resolution to some of the issues raised by the opposition, which include lowering the cost of living.
According to Wycliffe Oparanya, Azimio National Executive Council chairman, they will resume the demos on Tuesday, 2nd May, 2023.
The former Kakamega governor said they would have resumed on Monday, 1st May, 2023 but settled on a day later because of Labour Day celebrations.
"We have set the date on a Tuesday to excuse workers who shall be celebrating Labour Day on Monday May 1."
Azimio leader Raila Odinga had said he would call his troops back to the streets after the Holy month of Ramadhan.
He said the demos would go on in tandem with bipartisan talks, to demand for reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) among other issues.
President Ruto has urged Odinga to instead embrace the dialogue being spearheaded by the Parliamentary select committee.
The committee is co-chaired by Rarieda Member of Parliament (MP) Paul Otiende Amollo and his Tharaka counterpart George Murugara.
The 14-member committe, 7 from Kenya Kwanza and 7 from Azimio held its preliminary sitting on Thursday last week.
The second meeting is set for Tuesday, April 25th, 2023.
