It was a relief to the family of a man who was buried alive at Naisirongo village in Samia sub-county after his body was finally retrieved from a borehole he was drilling.
The 38year old Patrick Mande was buried alive on Sunday while drilling a borehole at his home state while in the company of three others who survived death by a whisky.
According to the residents, what started as a mission to quench the thirst for the family and neighbors turned into calamity after the walls of over 35fts collapsed trapping Patrick inside.
“Our brother was buried when the walls of the borehole caved in. We tried to save his life but we lacked the equipment necessary in such an occasion,” said Fredrick Oloo, brother to the deceased.
He urged the county government of Busia to ensure rescue equipment are available in all the 7 sub-counties as a precaution.
According to Samia elders led by Austine Masiga the area has experienced an acute shortage of fresh water for years and most residents depend on boreholes.
“Despite our proximity to the lake, Samia sub-county has always experienced an acute shortage of water forcing 85% or residents to depend on boreholes as an alternative solution,” noted Masiga.
The elders have pledged to help the family with cleansing rituals in line with the culture and tradition of the Samia community to purify the family from angles of calamities.
“We will conduct a cleansing ritual to the family and more so to the three who were with the deceased at the time of the disaster,” added Masiga.
The residents now want Governor Otuoma to fulfill his manifesto of ensuring clean water at all residents’ doorsteps.
