Butula Member of Parliament Joseph Oyula has urged his constituents to take advantage of the current rains by planting a variety of food crops with a view to enhance food security.

Speaking to the locals at his Butula home on Tuesday, Oyula noted that the area had fertile soil that supports maize, millet and sorghum production on a large scale that can help reduce poverty and increase the area’s economy.

"We must take advantage of this rainy season to plant enough crops,” he said, adding that the initiative will be the only way to reduce the cost of living.

He challenged farmers to incorporate new technologies and practices that can improve food security and overcome the diverse effects of climate change.

The MP also advised the local residents to practice crop rotation and reconsider planting indigenous crops which are drought resistant.

Oyula further promised that he will ensure that all the Form 3 and four students who applied for the constituency bursary who meet the requirements benefit from the kitty when funds are availed from the National treasury.
