The Kakamega County Governor, Fernandes Barasa, has challenged farmers in the Western region, to embrace sugarcane farming once more in a bid to support Mumias Sugar Company.
He said that the move will help in sustaining the Company and increase its production for consumption.
“I am calling upon the farmers to plant more sugarcane, to enable the Company to operate at its best. The Company cannot sustain itself without your concerted efforts,” he said.
He was speaking in the East Wanga Ward during the laying to rest of Mama Leah Lukungu, who was a devoted member of the Catholic Women Association (CWA).
Barasa said there was a huge demand for cane by the millers and the Company will only operate at its optimal if farmers grow more cane.
“Let us plant more sugarcane to match the Company’s needs. The Company cannot operate without your efforts,” said the Governor
He equally sounded a warning to cartels who are out to frustrate the operations of Mumias Sugar Company and Sarai Group.
This comes after the Company was shut down for two weeks with the Governor accusing some cartels of fighting the operations of Mumias Sugar Limited
