Embu County government has disbursed bursaries amounting to Sh102 million to needy students in secondary schools and Vocational Training Centres (VTSs) across all the 20 wards in the county.

A total of 34, 435 students out of 40, 845 applicants benefitted from the scheme which was the first one under Governor Cecily Mbarire tenure.

The application and selection of the beneficiaries was done electronically which has gone a long way in fighting manipulation including double or multiple applications.

Speaking while disbursing cheques to school principals of the beneficiary students, Governor Mbarire said the automation of bursary application scheme has ensured the whole process was above board in accordance with giving all children an equal chance of benefitting.

She promised to seek ways to enhance the bursary going forward to complement what the MPs were offering with the NG-CDF kitty to enable more learners from poor backgrounds achieve their academic goals.

“Secondary schools and primary schools other than ECDEs and VTCs are not devolved, but we are doing this because we have a responsibility and we understand how important education is,” she said.

She called on the principals not to divert the monies to other uses as it was meant to lessen the burden of school fees on parents.

Deputy Governor Kinyua Mugo underscored the importance of education, saying it was the only gift that can be given to underprivileged children to give them capacity to compete favourably with those from advantaged families.

The bursary Committee Chair Patrick Kamau said the move will go a long way in increasing retention rate of students in school and also completion rate.

Embu County Assembly Deputy Speaker Ibrahim Swaleh said they are ready and at hand to support initiatives geared towards transforming the lives of residents.
