Kenyan athlete Faith Kipyegon is the newest world record holder in town.
The 28-year-old set a new world record in the 1, 500m race during the Florence, Italy Diamond League on Friday night.
She reached the tape in a time of 3:49:11.
Before the race, the two times-World and Olympics champion spoke of her intention to break Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba’s 3:50.07 world mark, set in 2015.
"The world record was in my mind since last year, but I wanted to approach it slowly by slowly to see what was possible this year. I can't believe it! Now I have achieved what I wanted and what was in my heart and in my mind," beemed Kipyegon after the race.
To cap it all, athletes were cheering her to the finish line, when it became apparent that the new record was within her reach.
"All the athletes waiting for me at the finish line made me emotional. Thanks so much for all the support, it means a lot."
President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga led Kenyans in congratulating her for the new feat.
Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala finished second in the 100m race.
"Hardwork, determination and consistency has been crowned. Congratulations Faith Kipyegon for shattering the 1500m World Record in Florence, Italy and writing your name in the history of athletics. Kenya also salutes Ferdinand Omanyala for second position in 100m. Keep going," said Ruto.
"Faith Kipyegon, congratulations on your fantastic and spectacular feat of breaking the 1500m WORLD RECORD at the Florence Diamond League! Your run was amazing," said Odinga.
