Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali brilliant run earned him gold in the 3000m steeplechase which sealed his third consecutive world title in the men's 3000m steeplechase after.

El Bakkali outruned his top contender Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma who earned the second spot in the race.

Heading into the race, El Bakkali was unbeaten since September 2021, while Girma was and is still the world record holder. The Moroccan outlasted Girma in the last lap to condemn him to a fourth successive second-place finish in a major global event.

Commonwealth champion Abraham Kibiwott bagged bronze despite falling down in the last lap to take Kenya's medal tally in Budapest to three.

Bakkali used a relatively slow time of 8:03.53, with the heat in the Hungarian capital understandably taking a toll on athletes. Girma clocked 8:05.44. Kibiwott picked himself up after the tumble to finish with 8:11.98 ahead of his compatriot, Leonard Bett.
