Lighting struck dead a 15-year-old teenage mother of an eight-month-old baby at Bonyaiguba sub location in Nyamira County following heavy rains in the area on Sunday afternoon.
Nyamira Sub County Police Commander Moses Kirong’ confirmed the incident to the press saying there were very heavy rains accompanied by loud thunder and lightning.
Bonyaiguba Sub Location Assistant Chief Mr. Joseph Obiero said the late Ann Kerubo was harvesting rain water for domestic use outside their house while it was still raining when the lightning struck her dead.
Obiero said that after Kerubo’s mother died two years ago, their father deserted them and left for Nairobi city in search of a job and has never returned home since.
Kerubo, is the fourth born and only girl in a family of six children and takes care of her four siblings with the help of relatives and well-wishers as their first-born brother is working as a casual labourer in Mombasa City.
The Assistant Chief further confirmed to KNA that the lightning struck Kerubo’s house and left it with gaping cracks on its walls. “The miracle about this whole unfortunate incident is that Kerubo’s eight months old toddler who was sleeping in the stricken house while it was raining survived unhurt,” said Obiero.
Obiero said that Kerubo was discovered by her younger brother in Grade Three after the rains stopped at around 5pm.
“Her brother had taken shelter at their grandmother’s house and decided to go home after the rains stopped only to discover his sister lying on the floor of their house with her legs facing the door. His cry alerted the neighbours who came and discovered that the lightning had struck the girl,” Obiero said.
Kirong said the body of the deceased had burn marks on the right-hand side of her body from the head to the knee and fresh burn wounds on her abdomen. Her remains were taken to Kinara Hospital Mortuary for preservation as burial arrangements commenced.
