Government announces boda boda riders jobs in Dubai

By Peter Ochieng

Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Alfred Mutua wants motorcycle riders across the country to get ready for an interview that may land them a job in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Mutua, through a post on his social media pages said officials from a UAE company will be in the country next week to interview and hire motorcycle riders, with 600 positions on offer.

A valid Kenyan passport or proof of an eCitizen application in progress, a current certificate of Good Conduct or proof of an eCitizen application in progress and a valid rider’s license are among the requirements.

“Experience is not mandatory but is an added advantage. Bodaboda riders are highly encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will undergo four months of training in Dubai, during which the company will assist them in obtaining UAE driving licenses,” said the vocal CS.

In terms of earnings, the former Machakos governor said riders will earn 7.5 dirhams per delivery trip.

“The minimum daily average is 15 trips, translating to 112.5 dirhams per day. For 26 working days a month, this totals 2,925 dirhams (approximately 104,000 Kenyan shillings, tax-free). Riders with initiative can make upwards of 30 deliveries per day, increasing their earnings,” he added.

Other incentives include free accommodation, provision of work motorcycle, comprehensive medical care and provision of work visa.

However, the company does not cover pre-arrival costs, which must be borne by the employee. Successful applicants will need at least Sh168, 000 for payment to the Human Resource provider in Dubai, air ticket, medical fee and processing fee.

“Banks are aligned to offer loans to cover these costs, allowing employees to repay once they begin working in Dubai. The medical fee is paid first, and the remaining costs can be settled after passing the medicals. This ensures no unnecessary losses,” added the CS.

Interviews will be conducted on December 9th, 10th, and 11th, 2024, at Kamukunji Technical Vocational Centre, next to Kamukunji Primary, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM in Nairobi, and December 13th and 14th, 2024, at Kilifi North Technical Vocational Training Centre in, Watamu Town, Kilifi County.
