Nyong'o's Cup winners to bag Sh300,000

Winners of this year’s edition of Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o’s Football Cup will walk away Sh300,000 richer.

According to Timothy Nyakwamba, Kisumu County Sports Chief Officer, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th runners-up will also be awarded.

Nyakwamba said they are already done with preliminaries at the Ward level, with the focus now being on the Sub-County and County phases.

"I want to assure all the teams which will participate at both the Sub-County and County level that their transport and refreshments will be catered for, and they will be allowed to represent their wards as either a team or they blend the teams with various talented players from their respected wards," said Nyakwamba.

He stated that all the teams which participated in the tournament at the Ward level, were kitted by the county.

He added that plans are underway for the tournament to be an annual event, and incorporate other sporting disciplines.

"We had soccer scouts going round in all match venues scouting for talented players whom we hope will be picked to play for various clubs in the country and beyond.”

The tournament consists of boys and girls’ teams. It began on November 4th, 2023, with the final to be played at the Moi Stadium on December 3rd, 2023.

Kisumu governor Anyang'o Nyong'o said the tournament is not just about football, but the major aim is to bring Kisumu communities.

"The governor's cup is not just about football; it's about bringing our vibrant and diverse community together. Our youth are the future, and this tournament is a platform for them to showcase their talent, discipline, and dedication. It's a chance for us to discover the sports stars of tomorrow right here in Kisumu."

"I encourage the residents of Kisumu to come out and support these young athletes. Let's fill the stadiums with our energy and enthusiasm, cheering for our local teams and celebrating our vibrant sports culture," he added.
