Renowned political analyst Prof Herman Manyora has weighed in on the Nairobi gubernatorial race, arguing that the only way Azimio will defeat Kenya Kwanza’s candidate Senator Johnson Sakaja is if they settle on one candidate. Speaking during an interview with KTN news on Wednesday, Prof Manyora noted that the best suited candidate to defeat Sakaja is Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi. “Nairobi issue is very small…Since Kenya Kwanza already have one candidate, the Azimio side must also have one candidate, it's no brainer. You try anything else-you lose.  From the names we now have from Jubilee and ODM,the person who can beat Sakaja is Tim Wanyonyi straight away,” he opined. Justifying his hypothesis, Prof Manyora said the political architecture and tribal arithmetic of Nairobi favour Wanyonyi as opposed to the other candidates. He, however, noted that Azimio may be forced to sacrifice Wanyonyi and have him run as a deputy governor for political reasons. That doesn’t seem to favour Tim Wanyonyi. It means you go to the next level and say it may not be prudent and pragmatic for Azimio to field Tim Wanyonyi much as he is the one who can beat Sakaja…Then you move perhaps to the remaining candidates and you’ll find them in Jubilee,” he said. On Tuesday, former Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe joined the gubernatorial race further complicating the equation for Azimio. Other candidates interested in the position on the Azimio ticket include; incumbent Governor Anne Kananu, Richard Ngatia and Agnes Kagure. Meanwhile, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya council is expected to have its first meeting on Thursday, April 22, at KICC Nairobi from 7:30am.The meeting will be chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta who is the Chairperson of the council. Among issues expected to be discussed are; criteria for selecting presidential running mate, coalition’s lineup for Nairobi gubernatorial race and disquiet among members of the coalition.
