Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has endorsed Fernandes Barasa's bid for the Kakamega County gubernatorial seat.
Barasa is vying for the seat on the ODM ticket, with hopes of succeeding Wycliffe Oparanya who is expected to retire in August after constitutionally mandated 10 years in office.
Speaking in Sabatia, Kakamega County on Saturday, March 26, 2022, while drumming up support for his presidential bid, Odinga said that after he retires, Oparanya will move to Nairobi to assist him with some work.
"As we pass the baton to Barasa, Oparanya and I will go to Nairobi where he will help me work from there," Odinga said as quoted by
the Star.

Odinga's move means Barasa may after all land the ODM ticket in the gubernatorial race, without having to break any sweat in party primaries.
According to timelines released by the party's National Elections Board (NEB), ODM will conduct nominations from April 01 to April 21, 2022.
ODM supporters in Kakamega will hold primaries on April 19.
If Fernandez Barasa gets the Orange party's ticket, he will square it out with ANC's Cleophas Malala and DAP Kenya's professor Philip Kutima among others.
Malala got the nod to vie for the seat, after Kenya Kwanza principals - deputy president William Ruto, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang'ula brokered a deal that saw Bony Khalwalwe agree to join the Senatorial race on the UDA ticket.
Barasa was until February this year, the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) Managing Director Fernandes Barasa.
He resigned to contest for the Kakamega County gubernatorial seat.
