Workers in Ramoda ceramics company in Isinya Sub county have held demonstrations over what they termed as poor working conditions, wages and mistreatment by the management.
Speaking to the media during their demonstrations at Isinya town, the workers lamented that they are forced to work for 12 hours without overtime allowances.
"We report to work at 8am in the morning and leave at 8pm in the evening without overtime allowances. The only salary we get is Shs. 9,000 per month which is not enough to sustain us given the hard economic times," lamented Isaiah Lepilal, one of the workers.
The workers said that the company does not provide them with protective equipment yet they work in a hazardous environment.
"We are forced to open the gas burners without masks. Most of us have fainted during the process and we are not even given milk as a form of first aid. The only protective gear they provide is gloves which we are forced to share with colleagues," said Peter Kioko, another employee.
Kioko added that they were also forced to operate the kiln without any protective gear despite their frequent pleas to the management for provision of the safety kits.
The Director of the company Kanyi Gitonga said that henceforth, they have agreed to have an open door policy where all the workers have a chance to have their grievances and concerns listened to by the management.
He added that all departments within the company would have leaders who would form a committee that would be meeting with the company's leadership any time a need arises.
