Eight tons of sandalwood worth Sh32 million was set ablaze at Maralal police station Wednesday following a court order to destroy the same in a public burning.
Samburu Central Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Titus Omanyi said that the security committee received a court order to destroy the endangered tree species after a court case was concluded.
"After a court case is concluded the sandalwood is destroyed through burning so that it cannot get into the market again," he said.
Omanyi said that the sandalwood was intercepted by Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officers, while being illegally transported from the Kirisia forest.
"The officers acted on intelligence reports to intercept the evasive suspects who were arrested and taken through the justice system and are awaiting the judgment of the case," he said.
