Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has joined the race to succeed Hassan Joho as Mombasa County governor in the August 9, 2022, General Elections. This is after the Wiper Democratic Movement submitted Sonko's name for clearance by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (EACC). Sonko will battle it out for the Wiper ticket with Kisauni Member of Parliament Ali Mbogo in the upcoming party nominations. The former Nairobi Senator bolted out of the ruling Jubilee party and joined Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka-led Wiper party. “The Buffalo gang is growing by the day! This evening, flagged by @TheWiperParty Chairman Chirau Ali Mwakwere, SG Shakila Abdalla, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua and Embakasi South Mp Julius Mawathe, we received the immediate former Nairobi Governor @MikeSonko to the Wiper family,” tweeted Musyoka, shortly after the former governor joined his party. On March 29, Sonko's aide Francis Wambua had claimed that Sonko was poised to reclaim his seat as Nairobi Governor. “Sonko is returning and will be going for the top seat. He is coming home to where he was voted by more than 800,000 residents in the last elections, which was the second-highest after the presidential vote tally,” said Wambua, as quoted by The Star. However, Wiper Party on April 7, unveiled Ben Mulwa as its candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.
