A Narok teacher who went viral on the social media platform for her kind gesture of sewing her pupil’s uniform now wants the local leaders to boost the school infrastructure so that the learners can have a conducive learning environment.
Teacher Joyce Sempela Malit of Siyiapei primary school in Narok East Sub County said the pupil’s dress was torn as a result of a protruding nail on her chair that caused a hole in her dress.
She called on the county government and area member of Parliament to upgrade the standards of the school that is not fenced, lacks electricity and has depreciated classrooms and washrooms despite being few meters from the Narok- Maai Mahiu highway.
The 56 year old teacher who is still receiving gifts from the members of the public for her kind gesture said she was amazed by the way her action was recognized in the entire world saying this is one of the many deeds that teachers in the country do.
“This is one of the actions that teachers do. But I was shocked by the way I went viral on social media and the many presents and phone calls I have received in the past one week,” she said.
The pupil’s class teacher Ms. Sabina Esho said when she realized that the girl had a torn dress, she asked Ms Malit to help her stitch the dress for the girl.
Ms. Esho then sent all the pupils outside to the playing ground and wrapped her lesso around the young girl as her dress was being sewn.
“I am the one who took the picture that went viral on social media, with the intention of keeping memories of our class room work after we retire. Little did we know the picture could cause much impact,” she said.
Among the rewards the teacher has received is a fully paid holiday trip to the Maasai Mara National Reserve from travel and Tours Company and a sewing machine from a local businessman Stanley Mutent as the girl received assistance from former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
