Trailer crushes two motorcyclists to death in Malindi town

Two boda-boda operators died on the spot while their colleague sustained leg fractures after a trailer veered off the road and hit them in Malindi town early Thursday morning.

Confirming the incident, Malindi Sub County Police Commander Wilmot Mwanyalo Mwakio said the trailer driver was trying to avoid a head-on collision with a speeding motor vehicle when the trailer swerved off the road and rammed into three boda-boda operators.

“The driver, who was approaching the town from Mombasa tried to avoid a head on collision with another vehicle from the opposite direction, veered off the road and rammed onto the motorcycle riders, killing the two on the spot,” Mr Mwakio said in a phone interview.

He said the survivor was rushed to the Malindi Sub County Hospital while the bodies of the victims were taken to the Malindi Sub County Hospital Funeral Home, where they are awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The survivor, Mr Julius Ngala Charo, told reporters in his hospital bed that he had parked his motorcycle off the road when he saw the trailer moving towards him.

“Instinctively, I jumped off the motorcycle to save my life, but I hurt my legs in the process. It is unfortunate that my colleagues were crashed to death," he said.
