A section of political leaders in Homa Bay County have called on Nyanza residents to work closely with the government to enhance development in the region.
The UDA Party officials urged the residents to shun political leaders whose intention was to distract the implementation of development projects in the region.
The officials expressed concerns that some political leaders in Nyanza have intentions of frustrating government efforts to implement development projects in the region.
The leaders included Homa Bay County UDA Youth League Chairman Kevin Ouma, his Deputy George Ogwang, Assistant Coordinator Kennedy Ongati, the Chairman in Suba North Constituency Maurice Odhiambo and the Constituency Coordinator Bruce Ogweno.
They accused some political leaders of being against the implementation of development projects in the region especially Homa Bay and Migori Counties.
Ouma claimed that the political leaders had formed a tendency to oppose any project undertaken by the government or a government official in the region.
He cited criticism of Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo who was targeted by some leaders in the area when he went to raise funds in a church in Uriri constituency over the weekend.
“Some politicians in the Nyanza region do not mean well for the development of the people. Some of them are currently criticizing Dr. Omollo because he went to raise funds. This is wrong because it is through mobilization of funds that we can build our institutions,” Ouma said.
Ogwang said the Luo community had faced poverty for many years due to bad leadership. He urged them to take advantage of President William Ruto's receptiveness to implement development projects in the region.
“We have lived in poverty for many years as a community. I urge our people to work with the government to enable us to acquire development,” Ogwang said.
Ongati told the leaders to shun politics and allow the region to reap from development projects initiated by the government.
He argued that excessive politicking would derail economic growth in the region.
“It is not time for politics but these leaders still engage in petty politics to derail development in Nyanza. This is unacceptable,” Ongati said.
Ogweno said the expulsion of five MPs by the ODM party because they were working with the government is a sign that the party leadership is against development in the region.
“Today, Mbita- Sindo- Magunga Sori- road is being tarmacked because Suba South MP Caroli Omondi lobbied for it from the government. But it is unfortunate that the same Omondi has been expelled from the party. They don’t want development of the people,” said Ogweno.
He told politicians who want to distract development in the South Nyanza region to keep off. He also urged the Luo community to keep off such politicians.
“I urge the Luo community to work with the government because the President is willing to support us as a community. Let us shun political leaders who distract development from our region,” said Ogweno.
