Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has demanded an explanation from the national government as to why security officers attached to four Governors in Nyanza region have been withdrawn.

Wanga said that her security officers and those of her colleagues James Orengo (Siaya), Achilo Ayacko (Migori) and Anyang Nyongo (Kisumu) were withdrawn without justification.

Speaking Monday when she visited casualties of last week's demos in Homa Bay County Referral Hospital, Wanga faulted senior officials in the Ministry of Interior and National Administration for withdrawing security officers from the four governors.

Wanga claimed that there were ulterior motives in withdrawal of their security.

“Why is it that only Nyong’o, Ayacko, Orengo and myself whose security officers have been withdrawn? We demand an explanation from the government on the issue,” Wanga said.

Wanga was joined by former Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi, Homa Bay County Assembly Speaker Julius Gaya and Majority Leader Richard Ogindo in condemning what they claimed as police brutality on Azimio protestors in the Nyanza region.

The governor accused police of causing deaths and injuries which occurred in Nyanza during the protests.

She told the security personnel to stop killing the people who participate in the demonstrations in the region.

Wanga said the use of live bullets to shoot people who were expressing their constitutional rights amounts to violation of human rights.

Muriithi told senior government officers to understand that power is transient, hence they should not mistreat the people.

“The people who are in government today will also get out of power. Let them handle the people constitutionally,” Muriithi said.

Gaya and Ogindo told police to stop use of excessive force on protesters.
